Alumnus Gives Advice For Communications Students Beginning Their Careers

The School of Communication Studies at 麻豆视频最新最全 University will host 鈥淗ow to make a college degree translate into a productive career鈥 presented by alumnus Gerald (Gerry) Sargent, M.A. 1972, at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, in the FirstEnergy Auditorium in Franklin Hall.

Sargent currently serves as the Corporate Vice President of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., which is one of the most prestigious employment consulting, outplacement firms in the world.

As a successful employment consultant, Sargent will offer job placement insight to students launching their careers. Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. has provided outplacement assistance to more than 75 percent of the Fortune 500 companies in the United States. More than 90 percent of the employees the company has assisted obtained employment equal to or greater than their former job.

Employers consistently rank communication skills among the most important skills in potential hires. Students of all majors at 麻豆视频最新最全 and in the College of Communication and Information can take advantage of this rare opportunity to gain insight from Sargent鈥檚 expertise.

His lecture will emphasize the importance of communication coursework and training in landing employment.

The school will honor Sargent with the Centennial Award at its annual Centennial Awards Celebration during Homecoming weekend, on Friday, Oct. 4 at 5 p.m. in the Moulton Hall Ballroom. The Centennial Award is given to those associated with the school that are nationally and/or internationally recognized for their contributions to the field of communication.
