Poet: Fatou M鈥橞aye
Hometown: Kent, Ohio
鈥淲hen we were younger, my girlfriends and I called this tree Mrs. Oak,鈥 says Fatou M鈥橞aye, sitting beneath the tree that was their gathering place on their elementary school playground. 鈥淲henever we felt sad or lonely we would talk to her鈥攊t would make us feel better. This year we realized it is a maple tree!鈥
M鈥橞aye wrote the poem 鈥淭hank You, Tree鈥 last fall as a fifth-grader attending the Holden Elementary School Writer鈥檚 Club, an after-school program. David Hassler, director of the Wick Poetry Center, held a workshop at the club as part of the center鈥檚 outreach efforts to the community. 鈥淚n the first session, we started with the idea of being grateful for something in our lives,鈥 says Hassler. 鈥淔atou chose this tree.鈥
鈥淚 wanted to thank her for helping me and my friends,鈥 says M鈥橞aye. 鈥淚 wanted to thank all the trees. Without them we wouldn鈥檛 have healthy, happy lives.鈥
